For second year consecutive, the Central of Applied Social Arts (The CASA de CAJE and the Navegantes del Palomar) collaborates with the General Foundation of the University of Alcalá in the 16th International Graphic Humor Exhibition. This year, the exhibition hall of the Central provides space for part of the exhibitions of this edition, devoted to the achievement of universal basic education, the second Millennium Development Goal created by the UN. From October 22nd, and until the middle of December, visitors can watch several Works by Ziraldo, prestigious Brazilian cartoonist, winner of the “Quevedos” Latin American Graphic Humor Award and author of the character author of the character “O Menino Maluquinho”.
The Central of Applied Social arts complements this proposal with an exhibition made by Los Navegantes del Palomar, entitled “Pupitre del Humor” (Humor desk), suggesting that the education also recycles, and that humor can not be limited. Besides there will be a panel about the perfect high school, made by the students of the Training Center “Las Naves”, in Alcalá de Henares.
Ziraldo Alvés Pinto received yesterday at the Main Hall of the University of Alcalá the prestigious “Quevedos” Latin American Graphic Humor Award 2008. He is the sixth awarded with this biannual award granted by the Spanish Ministries of Culture and Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, together with the General Foundation of the University of Alcalá. The Brazilian author was overcome by emotion for being granted with this award.
Rogelio Blanco, General Director of Books, gave him this award that is the most influent and the best money worth in the field of graphic humor. He emphasized Ziraldo’s devotion to social and cultural aspects, and stressed the importance of reading and its promotion that he made since his first Works.
As well as different authorities from the Culture and Foreign Affairs and Cooperation Ministries, AECID, the University of Alcalá, the Alcalá City Hall and other important academic, civil and political figures, the ceremony in the Main Hall counted with the attendance of the famous characters created by Ziraldo, such as the very popular Menino Maluquinho, Supermae, Jeremías el Bueno and the Profesora Macanuda. According to Ziraldo’s words, he felt like being at his home, in the tiny villa of Caratinga.
After the ceremony, Ziraldo Alves inaugurated the exhibition Ziraldo: Humor do Brasil (Ziraldo: Humor of Brazil) that can be visited at the La Fábrica del Humor (The Humor Factory) until the end of November.
La letra con humor entra (Things are better learnt with humor) is the title of the main exhibition of the 16th International Exhibition of Graphic Humor organized by the General Foundation of the University of Alcalá.
As it happened in former editions, the central subject has a great social relevance, as we understand that graphic humor is one of the best tools to raise awareness of aspects of great social relevance without losing any seriousness, as it is a call for reflection. In this edition, the authors have given their perspective of the second Millennium Development Goals, that is getting the universal basic education for 2015.
There are millions of children who are not receiving any education, and many more don’t attend school more than five years. To his overwhelming figures we must add that many children that end the basic school period, the education received is so limited that doesn’t help them to escape from poverty. The combination of these factors (lack of access and poor quality) creates the existence of 860 million illiterate adults. Girls have it worse, as they are two thirds of the number of children that don’t receive any education.
This is the situation denounced the 166 authors coming from 44 countries that try to raise awareness about this problem. The wide geographical range of authors is reflected in the presence of countries so different like Canada, Israel, India or Iraq, Latin American countries and European countries such as Germany, France, Italy or Portugal. It is important to emphasize, once again, the good disposition shown by all the authors to take part in this International Graphic Humor Exhibition.
